Why Be Thankful?
Ephesians 1:16 “Cease not to give thanks for you making mention of you in my prayers.” Commentary: So why give thanks? Because everything we have is a gift from God! Our breath! Our health! Our parents! Our teachers! Our Pastor! Our church! Our Savior! Our nation! Our home! Our jobs! Our income! Our retirement! Our sons and daughters! My wife! Our vehicles! Our President, Congress and Senators! Our judges! The Holy Spirit! My Bible! Have we forgotten anything? Yes! Our enemies! What? They give us the opportunity to forgive! Love them! Pray for them! Help them when they are down and out like Joseph did for his brothers! We were once enemies of God and apart from him! To love your enemies is to be God like! The blessings and gifts we receive from God we need to pass on to others like his love! Gifts we cannot earn or merit! It rains on the just and the unjust! Thanksgiving? What Does it Mean?
The first time the word thanksgiving appears in your Bible is Leviticus 7:12. Here is the scripture: “If he offer it for a thanksgiving, then he shall offer it with the Sacrifice of Thanksgiving unleavened cakes mingled with oil, and unleavened wafers anointed or consecrated with oil, and also mingled with oil, of fine flour, and fried.” Comment: So if he? Who is he? The Priest shall offer! The word thanksgiving in the Hebrew, Strong’s Number 8426, means to extend the hands with a confession to offer praise to God for the sacrifice! So a sacrifice is required! Your turkey made a sacrifice for you! His very life! President Trump pardoned two turkeys but still one had to be sacrificed! God made a sacrifice for you! His only Son Jesus Christ for our sin! Jesus our High Priest became the sacrifice! We are pardoned by his sacrifice! This is why we offer praises for the sacrifice God has made for us! Thanksgiving is connected to sacrifice! There is no benefit without sacrifice! Our young American soldiers have sacrificed themselves and their families for our safety! There was a sacrifice made for your thanksgiving dinner! Someone prepared it for you! I always have problems with politicians who want to sacrifice you for their benefit yet unwilling to sacrifice themselves for your benefit! Commentary: Christian Evangelism spread from Rome to England and then to America! Western Civilization is Christian civilization! Here is a recent quote by a publisher D. Clark on December 10, 2019. “Church attendance in England has fallen by about 211 thousand since 2009. The average weekly attendance in 2018 has fallen to just 870.9 thousand. In the same year just over one third of the people in U.K. identified as being Christian as compared with two thirds in 1983.” So what explains these significant drops in attendance not only in U.K but in America? We certainly have more technology to get the word out so what is going on? These drops are identified with younger generations so what is influencing them away from God! The teaching of Darwinism in public schools in America and the U.K. as a science! Atheism as a science! So God does not exist so why bother with church or a bible? Marx knew the religious vacuum in any nation will be filled with the politics of Socialism and Marxism! Christianity was the firewall to protect Democracy! From history even as Marx has been quoted Socialism is the first step to Communism! Hitler a Darwinist tried to destroy the British Empire but failed! Marx knew if we can invade the minds of school children with Evolution then we can have those next generations for our political purposes! So those in Christ our future is secure! Our job is to take the Good News to the world still applies! I shared the Gospel in a mall here in Atlanta yesterday. I handed him our Gospel tract and then he said I am a Christian! After he read the tract and with about 5 minutes of witnessing to him he said I did not know these things? He is young so my job is to place the Gospel into the current culture and expose lies with the truth! You must do the same! Pass on what God has given you especially in the church! If you have any years on you as a Christian you can leap frog a younger Christian ahead in years to mature them to meet the challenges of this generation! The older you get in Christ the more value you have to Christ and his church!
