“And to the angel (pastor) of the Church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth, and shutteth and no man openeth.” Commentary: If you are holy and true before God and men you will never deny the name of Jesus! You will always confess him and proclaim him before men! Peter had a denial problem but then confessed him even unto his martyrdom. Jesus hates political correctness! No Happy Holidays here but to proclaim the Christ in Christmas! The world will try to silence you about your Christ using intimidation tactics! I do not wear my religion on my sleeve? Jesus if you have him lives on your inside! I would be a Christian were it not for a Christian? Fact is only Jesus can save you no Christian can! Our job is to point people to the Savior! They must come the same way we have come! Whatever is on our inside comes out on the outside! Faith, love, hope, redemption, forgiveness, peace, faithfulness, prophecy, power, judgment and the resurrection from the dead! In America they will tell you he is a white man’s religion? Wrong! Jesus is from the Middle East! His message spread across Europe and finally to America! Jesus is a brown or olive skinned man! Jesus said I knock at the door! If you let me in I will commune with you! I will encourage you and save you from your sin! If you shut the door on me no man will be able to save you! You will be lost forever! Jesus is knocking at your door! Will you answer his call? Are you too busy? Did you hang up on God? If you answer his call your life will be changed in a way you could never do on your own! Jesus Makes a Confession About You? Revelation 3:5
“He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white rainment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.” Commentary: Some Saints at the Church at Sardis get their names mentioned as honorable mention to the Father by Jesus! Some get their names blotted out of the book of life! Do you confess Jesus daily from your lips at work or at home? In the market place where you go? Are you ashamed of him? If his name is never on your lips your name will never be on his lips! Jesus has to be more than a cuss word to you! Do you hear his words once a week but never speak his words? In any church some will go to heaven and some will not! When the Saints go marching in I want to be in that number! How about you? Surely my church membership is enough? No organization or denomination can save you! No Pastor can save you! His job and your job is to point people to the Savior! No amount of money given to a ministry can save you! Only Jesus can save you! There is only one road into heaven but many roads out of heaven! I have decided to follow Jesus as the old hymn says written in India! Church at Sardis! Revelation 3:3
“Remember therefore how thou has received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shall not watch, I will come as a thief, and thou shall not know what hour I will come upon thee.” Commentary: Christ will judge his church! Judgement begins at the House of God! He will come unknown to some! His stealth footsteps unknown to the perishing! Some in the church would not repent! Sin not forsaken with hypocracy and the decay of sterile religion! It was a church in the form of Godliness yet no power! A dead church! Buried but never resurrected! Jesus called them to be watchful against their enemies and to be active and sincere in their duties dependent upon the Holy Spirit to revive and strengthen their faith and affection living for God alone! Jesus did make mention of a few faithful at the Sardis Church! Surely those members are written down in the Book of Life! We are to live for God with all the evil that surrounds us! As Jesus supplies our strength to endure to the end we through his grace snatch the deceived out of the jaws of Satan! Stay faithful in the midst of an unfaithful generation! Choose good over evil! Proclaim his good news in the midst of all the bad news! Proclaim his love for the world that has rejected him without cause! Stay faithful and true to Christ and his church! One Name Above All Names! Revelation 2:26
“And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations.” Commentary: Christ who came to die will come again to reign! We who are united with Christ today will reign with him tomorrow! We can never rest unless we work! A good work here on earth yet a nobler work to be done in heaven! He gives us authority because of his conquering rule! Might is not right but right is might! We are so identified with him that he shares his possessions with us! The bride is endowed with the wealth of the bridegroom! Our crowns are because of his Cross! He is the morning star because of his royal dominion! The Saints share in the judgment of the nations with Christ! The Arabic Bible version reads; “and keepeth my words and my works.” Our doctrine and works need to agree! He has power over Gentiles and their pagan worship rescuing them from the deceptions of Satan! The Gospel is the power of God weakening the Kingdom of Satan! What is our Christian vocation? False Teachers! Revelation 2:20
Commentary: False teachers in the church at Thyatia in the first century are the same problem we have in the 21st century church today! Jesus warned us there would come many false teachers driving people away from Christ! In life we can do ten things right and one thing wrong and it wipes out all the good things we have done! This is why it is so important to get Christ right because then you can recover from all your sin!`He took your sin upon himself and paid the price of death on a Cross for you! If we trust ourselves we will fail! In the Old Testament or what I like to call the 1st Testament Jezebel was the wife of King Ahab. She was an influence for evil! She even had a man killed to get his property! She was a idol worshiper of Baal. Remember in idol worship you will always make yourself God! Whether Hinduism, Islam, atheism or any other religion. Let me explain! I spent a number of years in India. I would ask the Hindus who God was? They have millions of idols! They would tell me God is who you create him to be in your mind! I would say my Bible says God created man! Just the opposite! I asked many Muslims there how do you get to heaven? They told me they must die for God through becoming a martyr! I told them my Bible says God died for us! Just the opposite! They make themselves God! God created man in his own image! Yet they make God in their own image! Just the opposite! Heaven and hell are opposites! Jezebel used her power and influence to do evil! What are you doing with your resources? Are you promoting the Gospel of Jesus Christ? The dogs ate Jezebel but her spirit lived on in the 1st Century church and even today opposing Christ! There are many good women preachers in the church today but your only defense from error is to know your Bible! Any ideology or religious doctrine that says there is another way to God than through Christ is a heresy! Jesus commended this church in some ways but also disciplined them in their doctrinal error! How to Overcome Sin? Revelation 2:17
“He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches: to him that overcometh will I give to eat the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saying he that receive it.” Commentary: God speaks to his church! If you are part of his church then you will be reading your Bible regularly and studying it everyday! Before I got saved it just collected dust on my book shelf! I only picked it up on Sunday to carry to church! The word “manna” or bread has a Hebrew root word that means purpose! God fed the Jews manna in the wilderness to preserve them for his purposes to bring them into the promise land! Even though only two made it in of that generation the next generation followed Joshua and Caleb into the promised land! God preserves us for his purposes! To be a witness for him in the earth and glorify his name! Jesus said I am the bread of life! Bethlehem means house of bread! Jesus said you will never thirst or hunger if you partake of me! Hidden manna! We are hidden in Christ! As the world chases after vanity in anxiety and fear we are secure in Christ! He secures us in himself! Jesus said I go to prepare a place for you in heaven! A white stone? Judges of antiquity would drop a white stone in a urn if the accused were innocent! If judged guilty they would drop a black stone in the urn. Purity and innocence is represented by the white stone! White garments of holiness! Then a new name is written! Jesus said we must be born again! A change in name means a change in character! Our character is defined by our name! Who we identify with? Jesus is the name above all names! His name is dignity, power, love, purity, forgiveness, redemption, judgment, faithfulness, patience, eternal life and all the character we ascribe to but cannot be without him! Jesus is sinless because he is more than mortal he is God! The perfect sacrifice and only sacrifice that would satisfy the Father! Only he can raise you from the dead! No mortal is able or willing! Raise you to eternal life or eternal judgment depending on what you do will him! Accept his sacrifice for you or reject him? Do you want him more than your sin? Sin & Repentance! Revelation 2:16
“Repent or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.” Commentary: What is the sword in Jesus mouth? Sharper than any two edged sword dividing and separating the truth from the big lie? Surely God has not said? Jesus separates the sheep from the goats! Some are saved by him and others condemned to eternal hell! He judges the living and the dead! He has power over death raising all mortals from the dead to stand before him! With his sword of his mouth he separates those in either heaven or hell! He created the heavens and the earth! He commended the widow but condemned the rich! He warned the religious yet saved the repentant! He condemns the works of men yet rewards those who live by faith! He will lead the last great battle on earth against Satan and defeat him and bind him for a thousand years! He hands out the martyr crowns for believers! He judges those who persecute the followers of Jesus and the persecutor of the Jews! The sword of his mouth is his words! The Word of God found in your Bible! We live and die by his words! If you want to hear God speak read your Bible! Your soul is weighed in the balance! The balance scale of justice! Do you come up wanting? Miss the mark? He writes his own in the Lamb’s Book of Life! Your sin will either condemn you or save you! All depends on what you do with it? Repent or be condemned! This is not rocket science! To tell God you are sorry is to much for you? To reject the Cross and the suffering Jesus made for your sin is even more cruel than his suffering for your sin! Be wise and come into the love of God as he waits for your decision! Doctrine of Nicolaitians Revelation 2:15
Commentary: So why did Jesus hate the Doctrine of the Nicolaitians? Sometimes they are called Antinomians a group of people within the church holding a false doctrine opposing Christ! They believed they could freely participate in sin because by grace the law of God no longer applies? So what did Jesus say in John 14:15? Jesus said if you love me keep my Commandments! To honor God is to keep his Commandments! Jesus never broke the law! He was Lord of the Sabbath! We have all broken his Commandments for all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God! His love for us in suffering and dying on the Cross for our sin through love for us makes us understand that our breaking his Commandments caused his great suffering and death because of us! So in his love he has forgiven us of our sin and the breaking of God’s Laws so we want to keep his Commandments so not to crucify him again! We ask Jesus to forgive us all our violations of the law and sin against God and man! Even though none of us can keep his commandments his love for us enables us to be sensitive to sin and to repent of any sin past, present or future! Grace is God doing for us what we cannot do for ourselves! We can sin by ourselves and to do this violates the very purpose Jesus came to redeem us! He has removed our guilt and to do the same sin that caused our guilt is blasphemy against the will and purposes of God and his redemptive sacrifice on our behalf! Jesus said the two greatest Commandments is to love God and man! To reject his law is to reject his love because he paid the price of death the penalty for sin that we have initiated against God and man! Forgiveness of sin cannot be a license to sin again under the false ideology of grace! Grace is God doing for us what we cannot do for ourselves! Divining for Money! Revelation 2:14
Commentary: You maybe familiar with the story of Balak and Balaam? This story is in the Book of Numbers in your Old Testament. Balak was rich and powerful! So he hired Balaam to put a curse on Israel. God had to even enable a donkey to speak to Balaam of his error! Balak tried to buy God off and change his will for Israel! How foolish! It is usually the wealthy that persecute the church! Persecute the followers of Jesus! While ministering in India for 3 years I witnessed the Hindu Priests divining for money! Someone would come to them and put a curse on someone else either their spouse or an enemy to bring sickness and death for money! How different when Jesus says we are to pray for our enemies! It was funny in that the party cursed would go to the same Priest and pay more money to get the curse reversed! The Hindu Priests would tell me that their curses worked on everyone except the Christians! So how does the church today divine for money? Book sales! Get rich selling books! My Bible has 66 Books so do I need millions of Books written about the Bible? I think not! When a church leader gives special priorities to the rich members and neglects the poor he is divining for money! Jesus had a lot to say about this! The widow threw in her two mites and Jesus said she gave more than the rich because she gave her all! I will never forget preaching in a remote mountain village in India. After the service this bare foot lady brought me a skinny little chicken with a string tied around the leg as her tithe offering to me! It was all she had! Inside I wept for she will miss some meals for this offering but the Holy Spirit said receive her gift for it is unto me! God gave his all for you on a Cross for your sin! To reject his gift is the cruelest thing you can do sacrificing your eternity separated from God forever! Pride trapped Satan and Adam and Eve producing death for themselves and future generations! Another Martyr! Antipas! Revelation 2:13
Commentary: So who was Antipas? His name is only mentioned here in your Bible! Some historians say he was Bishop of Pergamos where also was the seat of Satan! Jesus calls him his “Faithful Witness!” How did he die? He was roasted in a brass bull idol full size replica! They built a fire under the brass belly of the bull and threw him in! He is in the Hall of Fame of Christian Saints who would not deny their faith in Christ! Read Luke 9:23-24 and be reminded Antipas did not forget the scriptures but lived them out! Sadly among those here in America few if any Pastors would do this! It is all about money!
