We should be living our sermons! God has given the gift of rest. Receive this gift with open hands! Luke 5:16. Jesus often retreated to lonely places! Sounds counter-cultural! We need to adapt His rhythm for living! When God is present in our rest He is more present in our work! The strategy of our enemy is to keep us so busy that we find no place of rest in Him! Then he can keep us out of the work of God! Rest is resisted and opposed in our culture. Luke 8:22-25. Jesus was so much at rest that He fell asleep in the boat! A storm rises up on the water to disturb His rest! The boat was swamped with water! The disciples were worried and their lives were threatened! They woke Jesus up and He calmed the storm! Are you so worried you never spend time in His presence? If you give Him space He can calm the storm in your life! Jesus asked His disciples, “Where is your Faith?” Maybe gone with the wind? Anchor your soul in Christ today! Then the storms of life will not move you! In another case in John 6 and Matthew 14 Jesus retreats to rest and the disciples rush ahead in their boat across the sea. Another storm rises up and Jesus has to walk on the water to rescue them! Do you find yourself rushing out ahead of Jesus? We need to find the rest and rhythm in Jesus so we can walk out our Faith! Rest is on purpose and not an accident! You never want to meet God by accident? Say no to distractions that keep you from finding your purpose in God. Gifts have to be developed and that takes space and time to give them attention. Nourish His Gifts! Do the planting and watering so God can give the increase! We need to live a life from distractions! When you are in your twenties and thirties you are in a season of learning. Use the gift of time to develop the Gifts of God! Do not let the world steal your attention! Discernment is the antidote for distraction. Parents please give your kids space and time to explore their world at home. The stressed out soccer mom who is running their kids to every event on planet earth that their kids have no time for wonder and awe of God’s creation. Say no FOMO (Fear and missing out). Teenagers drive and text and are killed and injured in accidents for fear of missing out! They are distracted by what is not real! They miss out on the real! Reality is for you to find God! Through their electronic devices they live in a imaginary world! Say no to fear and guilt! The fear of man is a dangerous trap! Fear and guilt are bad motivators! Why do you do what you do? Hold true to your convictions! Many times as a Pastor I say no to people so I can say yes to God! Rest is very rewarding! A congregation member told me he has no time for rest because we are in the last days! We have been in the last days for 2000 years! One of the signs of the last days is that people will have no time for the Sabbath! The margins we create will make space for our mission! Do not have time? Time is a Gift from God! Honor Him with it! Find time for your primary Gift! Luke 10:33. In this account of Luke a man was beaten and robbed! The religious folks just passed by and ignored him? If we have pity on people that need help but ignore their needs we are then the most miserable lot! The Samaritan had time to help! He saw him took pity on him and then came to his aid! Are you to busy to help? He spent his own money and time to help this wounded man! The gift of rest gives us strength and a heart to help others! This is not a christening ceremony on a Greek ship! This is not the name of a statue in Athens! Anathema means a religious ban or excommunication. Maranatha means an exclamation of the approaching Divine Judgment of God! Paul said if any man have not love for the Lord Jesus Christ let him be Anathema Maranatha! The word love used here is phileo which means affection for. What do you have affection for? Money? Fame? Sex? Power? Position? Food? Pleasures? Drugs? Perversion? Ect? Is your affection set on Jesus Christ? Who is the Captain of your soul? If you try to be your own captain your fate is at the bottom of the North Atlantic along with the Titanic! Remember what the Captain of the Titanic said before leaving on it’s maiden voyage? He said not even God can sink this ship! If the light of Christ is dim in your vision then as a blind man you will grope around in the dark! Focus your life on the only beacon of hope you will ever have and begin eternity with Christ today! Mohammed the Messiah for Islam beheaded thousands of people in history! Here is a quote from Quran 33:26; “Then the messenger of Allah commanded that ditches should be dug in the earth, and they were brought tied by their shoulders and were beheaded! There were between 700 hundred and 800 hundred of them. The children who had not reached puberty and the women were taken prisoners and their wealth seized.” I wish I could paint a pretty picture of Islam but if I tried it would be in your blood! History and current events always unmask the truth about Islam. Even though our political leaders try to sugar coat Islam it is still the poison pill that if you take will kill you! When a Christian calls a coin toss what will he say? Heads or Tails? If Peyton applies the Word of God he would remember Deuteronomy 28:13. It says, “God will make you the Head and not the tail, thou shalt be above and not beneath and obey the commandments of the Lord.” In a step of Faith I would call Heads ever time! Peyton called tails yesterday in sudden death overtime and lost the game to Seattle! Peyton wrote a book with his father called “Manning.” About his faith he says he is quiet about it and actions speak louder than words. This is true because the actions that followed his word “tails”, lost the game for Denver! The point here is words always initiate actions! This is the way God set up the universe from creation onward! Peyton goes on to say he never prays for his team to win but prays no one gets hurt. It sounds nice but then who gets the credit for a win? God or Peyton? Quarterback Russell Wilson claims to have faith and trusts God but he just filed a divorce from his wife Ashton? We need to find the Jesus rhythm for our lives! I want to make a bold claim here! Most of our problems are made worse by moving too fast for too long! Too busy can lead to a unhealthy lifestyle. Are you addicted to business? We can choose chaos over contemplation! Is your “Tag” really busy? Busy may be the most important lie you will ever believe! In American culture there is an underlying assumption that says if you are not busy you must be a lazy bum! Your worth to God is not about being busy! Your worth is not about what you do but who you are! If you slow down you may have to be honest about what is going on in your life! Most of our marriage counseling involves couples so busy that many important things are left unattended and lead to crisis! Staying busy is an excuse not to address relationship problems. Some people do not like quiet because then Jesus can shine a spot light on their hearts and reveal issues. As disciples of Jesus He has called us to be learners and ambassadors! How are we like Jesus? Listen to Jesus! Obey Jesus! Are you to busy to listen and too stubborn too obey? It can be painful to make changes! Love your neighbor! Be peacemakers! Be merciful! Bless those that curse you! It takes time to do these things so avoid busy! We rush to church and then rush home! We say a little prayer and then move on! Who owns your time! The word time means, To Honor.” Is time yours? Matthew 11:28-32. Jesus is the best friend of families with problems. Jesus came into history in a very difficult time! The cruel Roman Empire with it’s dictators, military rule, taxes and crooked politicians! Remember Herod killed all the children in Bethlehem two years and younger trying to get Jesus! Jesus proclaimed come unto me and I will give you rest! Rest is just the opposite of busy! Rest means an intermission and a ceasing of your labors! It is a time of refreshing! You cannot get this anywhere else! You can go on a vacation but come back worn out! You can still be running on empty! Jesus said take my yoke upon me and learn of me! A yoke is designed for two oxen! Do not try to go it alone! Christ will carry your burdens and come along side of you! Jesus makes a beautiful exchange for you! Your sin for His righteousness! Jesus is gentle! He is not mad at you! You will find rest in Him! The real rest you need is only found in resting in Him! His burden is light! Luke 5:15-17. Jesus is the band leader! He knows the rhythm for living! After He retreated for rest for 40 days with prayer and fasting He returned and the news about Him spread even more! The crowds flocked to Him to learn and be healed of their infirmities! Rest is the important part of the healing process! Do you have the space for rest and healing? Your valid excuses will not give you rest. Jesus was very counter-cultural! Jesus could have hired staff, got up a web site, started ministries, gone on tweeter, facebook, taken selfie’s of Himself! But verse 16 says that he often withdrew Himself to a lonely place to pray! Jesus knew the pattern and rhythm required of His time to be with the Father! God has established a pattern for us for a healthy life! He wants you to take the Sabbath rest and cease from your labors! Not to be legalistic about it but to be diligent! Unplug! Cease from striving! Choose for the sake of your family to pull back and breath in! The healthy act of life is to breath in and receive from God! We take a vacation for recreation and fun! The Sabbath is for rest! Retreats are for reflection. To look at the big picture of your life! Am I headed in the right direction? Where am I going? Where are we going as a family? The Sabbath is for renewal! The Sabbatical is a gift from God! Do not squander the gift! It is like the half time at a football game! The fans get rest and refreshments and the players get rest and a new game plan too win! In the locker room the players sit down and listen! Get the new game plan for your life! Jesus withdrew to lonely places! Disconnect from the world! There are certain places in the Rock Mountains where cell phones will not work! I find these places of rest with my family! Do not be afraid of solitude! You will have to turn off your television and I-Pod! Unplug your computer! Find a place where you and God can meet! Pray and get back to regular conversations with Jesus! Have communion with Him regularly! Verse 17. The crowds came back! The customers returned and Jesus had power to heal the sick! If I had heard this from a guy on the street late at night who was drunk I could have understanding but I just heard it from the President of the United States? If these fighters are not Muslim who are they? Are they representatives from the Ladies Aid Society? He went on to say no religion would justify the killing of innocent people! Has President Obama ever read the Koran? He carries a Muslim name! The Koran is in English print. Let me give you the basic facts as taken from the Koran or Muslim Bible. If you are a Muslim you are innocent but if you are not a Muslim you are guilty of death! The good news is only 20 percent of all Muslims worldwide have ever read the Koran. Those that have follow it with terrorism! I have never heard one Muslim on the face of the earth ever apologize for any of these killings from 9-11 forward! A wide-eyed youthful James Madison traveling in Culpeper County in Virginia, came upon a jail that housed half a dozen Baptist preachers, held simply for publishing their religious views. These are mindless people who have a disconnect between their mind’s and their bodies! Why do they choose butchery over joining the civilized world? Remember John the Baptist who was beheaded? Jesus said in the Kingdom of God he would be the least! Who can be saved? Jesus said all things are possible with God! John the Baptist was beheaded Centuries before Islam ever came along! Satan is driving people to do these barbaric acts! Why? No religion can ever give cover from God for murder! Wickedness is intentionally trying to hurt someone! In the Bible it says human beings were created in the Image of God! It is not our physical appearance (Thank God), that we share a likeness with our Creator. It is through our minds that God shares His wisdom, intuition and His sense of Holiness! Our heads control the rest of our body. Our minds receive, interpret and act upon messages. Who is our messenger? God or Satan? Our minds oversee all our actions whether voluntary or involuntary. The head and body linked together define our spiritual identity. Our body can follow the head or the mind can follow the body! We have to have the mind of Christ! The path we follow is determined by the mind! The Bible says as the mind thinketh so is he. Our soul is eternal and no physical act of violence can separate us from the Love of God! Those who carry out wicked acts in the name of God are blind and deceived and risk eternal separation from God unless they repent through Jesus Christ for their wickedness! If you love God you love people! God died for you so you trying to die yourself for God is useless and a waste of your life and other lives and an eternity separated from God! Are you going to kill everyone in Heaven? Your Heaven is a hell created by your actions! Self-worship is you trying to do for God what God has already done for you!
